What C81 or C83 Means
Maytag documents C81 and C83 together: the cooktop has overheated. The instruction is to turn all surface controls to OFF and then verify that nothing is limiting airflow to the bottom of the cooktop. If the cooktop is not installed above an oven, that means opening the cabinet doors beneath it and checking for stored items restricting airflow.

Turn every surface control off and let the cooktop cool completely. Then open the cabinet or drawer below it and look at what is stored there: baking trays stacked against the underside, plastic containers, or a drawer packed to the top all block the airflow the cooktop needs, and moving them away from the underside is exactly what Maytag asks for. If the cooktop sits above a wall oven, the installation clearances matter instead, and a code that returns with a clear cabinet suggests the installation needs checking.
