What Your Maytag Error Code Is Telling You
Maytag writes its error codes two different ways, and which one you see depends on how old the appliance is. Current machines use a paired scheme that alternates between an F value and an E value: the F half names the system involved, the E half narrows it down inside that system. Older machines, and some models even now, show a short letter code instead - or no code at all, just a pattern of blinking lights. Either way the code tells you which circuit the control is unhappy about; it does not tell you which part failed. A code naming a sensor is caused by the wiring to it, a corroded connector or the board driving the circuit at least as often as by the sensor itself, which is why we measure the circuit rather than order the part the code is named after. Write the code down before cutting the power, because clearing it wipes it.
- F4
- Airflow and heating on a dryer - Maytag pairs F4E3 with the AF restricted-airflow code
- F5
- Door and lid locking, including a door that will not lock or release
- F6
- Control and user-interface communication, such as the interface losing the main control
- F7
- Motor and drive problems - motor speed sensing on a washer, wash motor on a dishwasher
- F8
- Water fill, supply and dispensing - low flow, a dispenser problem, or water where it should not be
- F9
- Draining - drain times longer than expected, or no drain at all
- LF or Lo FL
- The machine is taking too long to fill; also shown as F8 E1
- Sud or Sd
- Too many suds in the machine
- rL
- Items were detected in the drum during the Clean Washer cycle
- drn
- The washer is not draining properly
- HC
- The hot and cold inlet hoses are connected the wrong way round
- LdL or LdU
- The lid will not lock, or will not unlock
- OL or Ofb
- The load is too large, or out of balance
- AF
- Restricted airflow on a dryer - lint screen, vent or duct run
- L2
- Low or no line voltage reaching a dryer
- PF
- A power failure interrupted the cycle
- LOC or LC
- The control lock has been switched on
- Int
- The cycle was paused or cancelled
- dET
- The detergent cartridge is not detected in the dispenser
- H2O
- A dishwasher is not detecting water
286 Maytag error codes documented on this site, each one written from the manufacturer's own material. Where a code has no published meaning, we say so instead of inventing one.
No code at all is still information. Blinking cycle lights, a flashing LED pattern, a lid or clean light that pulses, or a display that has gone blank are all the control telling you something in a model that has no alphanumeric display to say it with. Note exactly which lights flash and in what order before you cut the power, then call us with the model number and that pattern - it usually narrows the problem as effectively as a code would.
Recognize the Warning Signs
These are the issues we get called about most. If any of this sounds familiar, it is worth a diagnostic visit before the problem gets worse.
Washer stopping part-way with the tub still full
Kill the power at the breaker and close both taps before opening anything, because the water comes out where you least want it. The drain pump, its filter, the hose and the pressure system are all technician work once water is standing in the machine. See likely causes →
Dryer tumbling but the load comes out damp
Restricted airflow causes this more often than every failed part combined, and packed lint in a duct is a real fire risk. Stop using it until the vent run has been checked end to end. See likely causes →
Refrigerator drifting warm while the frozen side holds
Cold is made at one coil and moved where it is needed by a fan, a duct and a damper. A stalled fan, a stuck damper or a failed defrost part starves one compartment while the other carries on. We measure before replacing anything. See likely causes →
Freezer running without pause and still not reaching 0 degrees
Frost buildup, a seal that no longer closes, or a defrost or fan problem. Take a thermometer reading, keep the door shut, and follow USDA guidance on anything that has already thawed. See likely causes →
Dishwasher leaving standing water in the base
Isolate it at the breaker, then lift out and rinse the filter assembly first. If water still sits there afterwards, the drain pump, the drain hose or the sink connection needs diagnosing properly. See likely causes →
Range burner clicking but never lighting
If you smell gas at any point, leave and call the utility from outside. Otherwise let it cool, check the cap is dry and seated square, and clear the slots. Still clicking after that means the electrode, switch or spark module needs testing. See likely causes →
Oven sitting well away from the temperature you set
Put a thermometer on the center rack and let the cavity settle before reading it. A consistent gap points at the heating element, the temperature sensor or the relay driving it, not at the recipe. See likely causes →
Cooktop zone dead at every setting
Usually the element, the switch behind the knob, or the power board on an induction model. If the glass is cracked, switch it off at the breaker and stop using it until it has been replaced. See likely causes →
Microwave running through the cycle without heating
The parts behind this sit on the high-voltage side and can hold a dangerous charge long after it is unplugged. This one needs a technician with the correct discharge procedure, not a home repair. See likely causes →
Commercial Laundry machine down and holding a problem
In a laundromat or an apartment laundry room, a machine out of service costs money every hour. Note the model and what the display shows when you call, and we will arrive prepared for that platform. See likely causes →
Garbage Disposal humming without the plate turning
Switch it off at the wall switch and the breaker, never put a hand into the chamber, and free the plate with the hex wrench underneath exactly as your manual shows. If it jams straight back up, it needs looking at. See likely causes →
Trash Compactor motor running while the ram stays put
The drive between the motor and the ram is not transmitting - typically the belt, the gearbox or the drive nuts. It sits behind a panel with the mechanism under load, so leave it isolated at the breaker for the visit. See likely causes →
Water Filtration System slowing to a trickle since the last cartridge change
Usually the cartridge is past its date, is not the correct one for the housing, or is not seated on its O-ring. Shut the supply and relieve the pressure before reseating it; a housing that still weeps afterwards needs inspecting. See likely causes →
Why Homeowners Trust Us With Their Maytag Appliances
Laundry Is What We See Most
Maytag built its name on washers and dryers and that is the bulk of our call list, from older top-loaders to current front-load pairs and commercial-line machines.
Nothing Starts Before You Agree
The diagnosis comes first, then a figure in writing. Decide against the repair and you have paid for the diagnosis and nothing more.
Arrival Windows We Expect To Keep
Same-day slots when the day still has room, and a window we actually believe in rather than a whole day spent waiting in.
Common Maytag Parts On The Van
The parts that fail most on high-volume Maytag models travel with our technicians, which is why a good share of visits end in a finished repair instead of a return trip.
A Straight Answer On Repair Or Replace
Where the repair does not stack up against the age of the machine, we say so before you spend the money rather than after.
Our Labour, Our Warranty
Every completed repair carries our own workmanship warranty. We are an independent repair company, not an authorized service provider, and we say so plainly rather than implying otherwise.
Why a Maytag Specialist Beats a General Repair Shop
A Maytag specialist focuses exclusively on Maytag appliances, carries Maytag-specific parts in every service vehicle, and trains technicians specifically on Maytag diagnostic procedures. A general repair shop works across dozens of brands and often doesn't stock parts — or carry deep expertise — for a less common model.
| Capability | Us · Maytag Specialist | General Repair Shop |
|---|---|---|
| Maytag parts in stock | Always | Sometimes |
| Maytag-trained technicians | Every tech | Maybe one |
| Knows current + legacy models | Every series | Limited |
| Repair warranty included | 30 days | Varies |
| Background-checked technicians | Required | Varies |
