An undercounter ice maker is a small refrigeration system wrapped around a water circuit, and that is why the diagnosis order matters. Water supply, filter, inlet valve and drain get checked before anything is said about cooling, because a starved mould and a failing compressor look identical from the outside: an empty bin.

On the Maytag MIM cabinets the harvest cycle is the part worth understanding. Ice forms on a chilled mould, then a short warming phase releases it. When the release stalls, cubes stay put, the next fill runs into a full mould and the machine settles into a cycle that never produces anything. A thermistor reading wrong, a stuck harvest component or a scaled mould all land there, and each is checked on its own rather than swapped hopefully.

These units are discontinued, so we say up front what that means in practice: most repairs are routine and the parts are still around, but if a specific component has genuinely gone out of supply, you will hear that instead of a quote for a job we cannot finish.

Often yes, because what fails is rarely exotic. Inlet valves, water lines, thermistors, drain pumps and harvest components are the usual culprits, and they are still obtainable for the MIM series. What we will tell you plainly is when a part has genuinely dried up, because a unit waiting on an unavailable component is not a repair, it is a delay.

Almost always water flow. A partly closed shut-off valve, a kinked supply line, a clogged filter or a failing inlet valve all starve the mould, and the cube freezes before the mould fills. Check the valve under the sink and the filter age before assuming the machine is at fault.

Close the shut-off valve, then look at where the water is arriving from. A drain line that has been nudged, a blocked drain or a split supply line are the common three. Do not run the unit while it is leaking, and keep it off if water is anywhere near an outlet.

Twice a year for a household unit, more if the water is hard. Scale is what shortens the life of these machines: it coats the mould, slows the harvest and eventually makes the cycle fail outright. A cleaning cycle with the proper solution is maintenance, not a repair.
