What E61, E62 or E63 Means
Maytag publishes E61 as the oven sensor circuit reporting an open condition to the control board, and both E62 and E63 as the same circuit reporting a shorted condition. All three name the sensor, the appliance control board, or the associated wiring, so they are documented here together as one circuit reported in different states.
Common Causes of E61, E62 or E63
- Transient fault cleared by a reset
- Sensor connector loose or corroded
- Sensor wiring heat-damaged
- Oven sensor failed open or shorted
- Appliance control board fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, and then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. Then run the microwave function with a cup of water to see whether that side works independently of the oven sensing. Beyond the reset, an oven sensor circuit fault is a meter test inside the cabinet. Note which of the three codes appeared and whether the oven was hot, warming or cold at the time, because a sensor that fails only when hot behaves differently from one that is open all the time.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
- An over-the-range unit is also mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.
