What F4E1 Means
F4E1 carries the same published attribution as F3C: a possible problem with the cavity temperature thermistor or the associated wiring. The different code number reflects a different internal check on the same sensor.
Common Causes of F4E1
- Transient fault cleared by a reset
- Thermistor connector loose or corroded
- Thermistor wiring damaged
- Cavity thermistor failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. Run a one-minute test on a cup of water. If the microwave heats, the fault is in the temperature sensing rather than in the heating itself, and the appliance can generally be used on manual settings while you wait. Note whether F3C has also appeared, since the two together strengthen the case for the sensor rather than the board.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
- An over-the-range unit is mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.
