Maytag Washer Not Spinning: The Lid Lock Comes First

Clothes soaked at the end of the cycle usually mean the machine never got permission to spin. The lid or door lock is the first thing to look at, and the easiest to misread.

A Maytag washer will not spin at speed unless it is certain the lid or door is shut and locked. That rule exists because a drum at full spin is dangerous to reach into. So when a load comes out dripping rather than damp, the fault is often not the motor at all: the machine simply never received the confirmation it needs to start.

What Normal Behaviour Looks Like

On most top-load machines the lid locks audibly before the spin, and stays locked for a short time afterwards while the basket coasts to a stop. That delay is designed in. If you stand over the machine and lift the lid the moment the cycle ends, you may see a basket still turning slowly, which is normal rather than a fault.

Owner-Level Checks

  • Listen for the lock: start a spin-only or drain-and-spin cycle and listen for the click. Silence at that moment points at the lock assembly or its wiring.
  • Look at what the lid closes onto: a detergent cap, a sock caught on the rim or a build-up of powder can hold the lid a few millimetres open, which reads as open.
  • Redistribute the load: a single heavy item such as a bath mat parked on one side makes the machine stop rather than spin. Spread the load around the drum and restart.
  • Check the drain first: a machine that cannot empty will not spin either, so standing water changes the question entirely.
  • Power-cycle once: unplug the washer for a minute, then plug it back in. A control that latched into an error state sometimes clears.

When It Is Something Else

If the lock engages and the basket still will not spin, the usual candidates are a worn drive component, a motor or speed-sensing fault, a failed shifter on machines that use one, or a control board that is not driving the motor. Diagnosis needs the cabinet open and the machine powered, which is work for a technician rather than an evening project. When you book a Maytag washer repair, tell us whether the lock clicks and whether the drum turns freely by hand with the power off.
