What F12 Means
F12 is one of the codes where the cooktop type matters. On an electric cooktop Maytag attributes it to a problem with a hotplate - the cooking surface, burner or element - or the associated wiring. On radiant element models the same code is published as an internal communication error on the touch control module. The two are genuinely different faults, so identify which type you have before drawing conclusions.

- Element or its wiring open circuit
- Element connector heat-damaged
- Touch control module internal fault on radiant models
- Control not switching the element
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the cooktop off at the breaker for a minute and restore power, then test each cooking area in turn on a low setting and note which ones heat. If one element is dead and the others work, that matches the hotplate reading of the code. If nothing responds at all and the panel behaves oddly, that matches the touch control module reading. Either way the repair is under the glass, but knowing which pattern you have saves the technician a diagnostic step.

- Element terminals carry high current and sit directly under the glass.
- Lifting a glass cooktop without releasing it properly risks cracking the surface.
