What F2 Means
F2 on an electric cooktop means the surface cooking area is too hot. Maytag states that it disappears once the area has cooled, and that if you turn the area back on and F2 reappears, the cooktop is still too hot. It is a protective response, not a fault.
Common Causes of F2
- Pan boiled dry or left empty on a hot element
- Very long operation at a high setting
- Pan much smaller than the cooking area
- Poor ventilation beneath the cooktop
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Remove the pans from the cooking area, turn it off, and let it cool - that is the whole published remedy. Do not try to speed it up with a wet cloth on hot glass, which risks cracking it. When the code clears, look at what caused the overheat: an empty or dry pan left on high, a pan far smaller than the element, or a very long session at maximum are the everyday causes, and adjusting any of them stops it happening again.
