What H or HOT Means

An H or HOT in the heat setting window means a surface cooking area is too hot to touch, even after it has been switched off. It is a residual heat warning rather than a fault, and Maytag simply asks you to let the cooktop cool. If the H stays on or starts flashing once the surface is genuinely cool, it asks you to power the cooktop down at the circuit breaker for one minute.

Common Causes of H or HOT

  • Normal residual heat after cooking
  • Hot pan left standing on a switched-off zone
  • Temperature sensor misreading
  • Control fault holding the indicator on

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Let the cooktop cool and the indicator goes out by itself. If the surface is cold to the touch and H is still shown or flashing, switch the cooktop off at its breaker for a full minute and restore power - that is the published step. If it comes back on a cold cooktop after that reset, the temperature sensing needs testing. Meanwhile treat the indicator as accurate and keep hands and cloths away from the glass.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Do not cool hot glass with water or a wet cloth; the thermal shock can crack it.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
