What Lock Means
The Control Lock exists to prevent unintended use of the cooking areas, and Maytag describes two behaviours. If Control Lock is activated while power to the cooktop is off, the cooktop is locked out entirely and no cooking area can be turned on from the touch controls. If it is activated while power is on, every keypad is locked except Power and Off.
Common Causes of Lock
- Control Lock switched on deliberately
- Lock key pressed accidentally while cleaning
- Lock engaged automatically after continuous beeping on some models
- Touch panel not registering the unlock press
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Touch and hold the LOCK key to unlock, which is the published method. If nothing happens, hold it for longer rather than tapping - these keys need a sustained press by design, so that a brush of a sleeve cannot unlock the cooktop. Check the owner manual for your model if the key is labelled differently. If the cooktop was locked out while powered down, it will need unlocking before any zone responds at all, which is what makes it look like a dead cooktop.
