What Err Means
Err is not a fault report. Maytag documents it as the message shown when the control receives an instruction it cannot act on - typically trying to change or modify a cycle while the washer is already running, or trying to start something the machine cannot do from its current state.
Common Causes of Err
- Cycle options changed while the machine was running
- An option selected that is not available on the chosen cycle
- Keys pressed in an order the control does not accept
- Sticking key on the control panel
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Press PAUSE or CANCEL to return the washer to a settled state, then make your selection before pressing START rather than after. If you need to change a cycle that is already running, cancel it properly, let the machine finish draining, and then choose the new cycle from the beginning. If Err appears without anyone touching the panel, treat it as a keypad problem instead and clean the control surface.
