What F8 E1 or LF or Lo FL Means

All three displays mean the same thing on Maytag washers: the machine is not receiving the amount of water it expects in the time allowed. Maytag is explicit that both hot and cold supplies must be open, because the washer blends them even on a cold wash. On front-load models the door may stay locked while this code is present, since there can be water in the drum.

Common Causes of F8 E1 or LF or Lo FL

  • One or both taps closed or only partly open
  • Inlet hose kinked behind the machine
  • Inlet valve mesh screens blocked with grit or scale
  • Low household water pressure
  • Inlet valve failed or pressure sensor misreading

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Check the obvious supply side first, with no tools needed: both taps behind the washer fully open, both inlet hoses free of kinks, and the house water supply working at a nearby sink. Then close the taps, unscrew the inlet hoses at the washer end with a towel underneath, and look at the small mesh filters in the valve inlets - they clog with grit and scale, and a blocked screen restricts flow exactly the way this code describes. Rinse the screens, refit the hoses, open the taps and try again. If both supplies run freely and the screens are clean, the inlet valve or the pressure sensing system is next, and that is a service diagnosis.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The hoses are under mains pressure, so both taps must be closed before a coupling is undone.
  • On a front-load machine the drum may already hold water, so the door should not be forced while the code is present.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

F8 E1 or LF or Lo FL FAQ

The washer mixes both supplies to hit its target temperature, so it monitors both valves. Maytag states that both must be supplied.

Inside the washer end of each hose coupling. They lift out with a fingernail once the hose is off.
