What lid Means
This is a prompt rather than a fault. Maytag shows lid when the washer lid has been left open, and it will not start or continue the cycle until the lid is shut. Maytag also documents what happens if it is ignored: after about 10 minutes the cycle resets and the machine drains the water it had taken in.
Common Causes of lid
- Lid genuinely left open or not pushed fully shut
- Something on the lid rim holding it up
- Lid switch not making contact
- Hinge worn so the lid sits proud
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Close the lid and the display clears. If the washer has already drained and reset itself, start the cycle again - but do not add more detergent. The clothes are already soaked in detergent from the first fill, and a second dose is what leads to a suds code later in the same load. If the code appears with the lid clearly shut, the lid switch is not being made, which is a genuine fault and a different repair.
