When a Maytag dryer tumbles happily and the clothes stay cold and damp, the motor circuit is fine and the heating circuit is not. That is a useful split, because it rules out a large part of the machine before anyone opens anything.
Start With Supply and Airflow
An electric dryer runs on two legs of power. Lose one and the drum still turns while the element stays cold, which is exactly this symptom. A tripped half of a double breaker, or a breaker that looks on but has actually tripped, produces it. Switch the breaker fully off and back on. If it trips again, stop and have the circuit looked at rather than resetting it repeatedly.
On a gas dryer, check the gas supply valve behind the machine is open and that other gas appliances in the house are working normally.
Then check airflow, because a dryer that cannot exhaust will trip its own safety devices and stop heating:
- Clean the lint filter, and hold it under running water. If water pools on the mesh instead of running through, fabric-softener film is blocking it. Scrub gently, rinse and dry it fully before refitting.
- Unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker, then pull it out and disconnect the vent hose at the back. Clear lint from the hose, the outlet and the wall duct.
- Check the outside flap opens when the dryer runs. A flap painted shut or blocked by a bird nest stops the machine breathing.
What Is Left After That
If power and airflow are good and it still runs cold, the usual findings are a failed heating element, an open thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat, a faulty cycling thermostat, or on gas models an igniter, flame sensor or gas valve coil at fault. All of that is inside the cabinet, around either mains voltage or a gas connection.
One point worth understanding: a blown thermal fuse is a symptom, not a cause. It opened because the dryer overheated, and restricted venting is the usual reason. Replacing the fuse without clearing the restriction simply repeats the failure. When you book a Maytag dryer repair, mention whether the machine is gas or electric and when it last vented properly.
