An ice maker needs three things: water arriving, a compartment cold enough to freeze it quickly, and a mechanism free to eject cubes and refill. Every no-ice fault sits in one of those three, and the first two are straightforward for an owner to check.
Start With the Obvious Switches
Many models pause ice production when a wire arm is lifted, or when an on-screen setting is switched off. Arms get knocked up while shopping is loaded, and settings get changed by accident during a clean. Confirm the ice maker is actually switched on before anything else. If the appliance has been moved recently, also confirm the household supply valve behind it was reopened.
Water Getting There
- Dispense water at the door, if your model does. Good flow means water is reaching the appliance and the problem is downstream. No flow points at the supply, the valve or the filter.
- Check the filter is a correct part, fully seated, and not long overdue. A clogged or badly seated cartridge chokes both dispenser and ice maker.
- Look behind the appliance for a kinked copper or plastic supply line, which happens when a refrigerator is pushed back into place.
Cold Enough to Freeze
Ice making slows or stops when the freezer is not cold enough. Check a thermometer reads at or below 0°F, and give the appliance a full day to recover if the door has been open or the setting was changed. A freezer that is not holding temperature is a cooling problem to solve first, not an ice-maker problem.
What Is Left
Once water, temperature and switches are confirmed, the usual findings are a frozen fill tube, a failed water inlet valve, a heater or motor in the ice maker module itself, or an optical sensor reading the bin as full when it is not.
