Open the lid of a Maytag top-load washer and you will see one of two things: a tall post standing up through the middle of the basket, or a low plate moulded into the bottom. They are not two versions of the same idea. They move clothes differently, they expect different loading, and a lot of service calls on healthy machines come down to using one as though it were the other.
The Post in the Middle
An agitator machine rubs fabric against the post and against other fabric. That mechanical action is effective on ground-in dirt, and it wants room to work. Load around the post rather than over the top of it, keep items below the top row of holes in the basket, and resist the urge to pack the last towel in. A drum packed tight cannot move clothes at all, so they come out looking barely washed.
The Plate at the Bottom
An impeller machine rolls the load through a smaller pool of water instead. Clothes rub against each other rather than against a post, which is gentler on fabric and leaves more usable space in the drum. Two habits matter here:
- Load evenly around the outside and fill loosely. Items need to tumble inward on their own.
- Expect to see less water than you remember from an older machine. A drum that is not visibly full of water is normal on this design, not a fill fault.
- Use detergent formulated for high-efficiency machines, at the dose on the pack. Extra foam cushions the load and stops the rolling action.
Which Complaints Are Really Faults
Clothes still dirty after a normal cycle, or a drum that will not balance, is very often a loading question first. What is not normal: water left in the tub at the end, a basket that does not turn at all, a burning smell, or a machine that trips the breaker. Those need attention rather than a change of habit. Keep an eye also on the seal and the dispenser, because residue builds up quietly.
