What F21 Means

F21 has two published meanings depending on the cooktop. On one electric cooktop page Maytag gives it as a problem with the power supply frequency. On radiant and induction pages the same code is published as a possible overheating condition, with the advice to verify the installation and allow roughly five minutes to cool. Check which applies to your model before acting.

Common Causes of F21

  • Cooktop overheated in heavy use
  • Airflow beneath the cooktop restricted by stored items
  • Installation clearances not as specified
  • Supply frequency out of tolerance
  • Generator or inverter supply rather than mains

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

If the cooktop is hot and has been in heavy use, turn everything off and give it the five minutes Maytag specifies, then try again. While it cools, check the installation: a cooktop needs clear airflow underneath, and a drawer packed with baking trays directly below it, or a cabinet crammed against the underside, will trap heat. If the cooktop is cold and the code is present, the supply frequency reading points at the electrical supply rather than the appliance, and that is an electrician question.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Supply problems are for a qualified electrician, not for the appliance owner.
  • Wait for the glass to cool before moving anything beneath the cooktop.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

F21 FAQ

Radiant and induction models point at overheating; check your own manual for the model.

It can be, because generator frequency is less stable than mains.
