What E03 Means
Maytag states that with E03 the keypad, or user interface, has reported a problem to the control board, and that there may be a problem with the keypad or the associated wiring. On an over-the-range microwave this is the touch panel rather than anything to do with heating.
Common Causes of E03
- Grease and steam film on the touch panel
- Object pressing on the keypad
- Keypad ribbon connector loose
- Keypad or its wiring failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wipe the control panel with a barely damp cloth and dry it - an over-the-range microwave sits directly in the steam from whatever is cooking below, and a film of condensed grease across the keys is the everyday cause of keypad complaints. Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, and then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. If the code returns on a clean panel, the keypad or its wiring needs replacing.

- A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
- An over-the-range unit is also mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.
