What E24 Means

E24 means the oven reached an overheat condition of 500F (260C). Maytag names the thermal sensor, the gas sensor, the appliance control board, or the associated wiring as possible causes. This is the one code in the over-the-range set where the reported condition is a genuine overheat rather than a sensor reading nothing.

Common Causes of E24

  • Vents blocked by cabinetry, trim or stored items
  • Thermal or gas sensor misreading temperature
  • Control board not switching the heater off
  • Heater relay welded closed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Stop using the oven function and let the unit cool completely. Check that the vents are clear and that nothing - trim, cabinetry or a stored item on top - is restricting airflow around the microwave, since a blocked vent can produce a real overheat. Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, and then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. If the code returns, leave the oven function unused until it has been diagnosed. An overheat that is real rather than a sensor error is not something to keep testing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
  • An over-the-range unit is also mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.
  • An overheat condition above a cooktop is not something to reproduce deliberately in order to observe it.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

E24 FAQ

It is the protection reporting that a limit was reached. Stop using the oven function and have it checked rather than testing it repeatedly.

Test it once with a cup of water, but if the code repeats, leave the unit alone until it is diagnosed.
