What SE Means
Maytag states that SE means there is a problem with the keypad, or user interface, or the associated wiring. It is one of the older display formats and carries the same meaning as the newer keypad codes.
Common Causes of SE
- Grease and steam film on the keypad
- Key stuck by contamination
- Keypad connector loose
- Keypad or wiring failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Clean the control panel thoroughly with a cloth wrung out in warm soapy water and dry it, since a grease film across the keys is the single most common cause on an over-the-range unit. Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. Press each key in turn and note which respond. An SE that returns on a clean cold panel means the keypad or its wiring needs replacing.

- A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
- An over-the-range unit is mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.
