What F9 Means

F9 reports that the oven could not execute the function, and Maytag names both the appliance control board and the relay control board, or the associated wiring. It is the broadest of the control codes, naming both boards rather than one.

Common Causes of F9

  • Transient fault cleared by a reset
  • Wiring between the two boards damaged
  • Relay control board failed
  • Appliance control board failed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. Test with a cup of water. If F9 returns, the diagnosis involves testing both named boards and the wiring between them, which is why a technician takes it rather than a parts guess. Note which functions still work, if any - a microwave that grills but will not microwave, or vice versa, tells the technician something a code number alone does not.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
  • An over-the-range unit is mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
