What Sud or Sd Means
Sud, displayed as Sd or 5d on some panels, means there is far more foam in the drum than the cycle should produce. The washer cannot spin water out through a head of suds, so it runs an automatic suds-reduction routine: extra rinses, pauses and a slower spin. The cycle takes longer and the load may come out wetter than usual. It is a detergent problem, not a broken part.
Common Causes of Sud or Sd
- Non-HE detergent used in a high-efficiency washer
- Too much HE detergent for the load or for soft water
- Detergent build-up in the drum from repeated overdosing
- A heavily soiled load releasing extra foam
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the suds-reduction routine finish rather than cancelling it - stopping it halfway leaves detergent in the fabric. For the next load, use only High Efficiency detergent and measure it against the load size rather than filling the cap. If your water is soft, use less than the bottle suggests, because soft water needs noticeably less detergent to do the same work. To clear residue from a load that has already foamed, run Rinse and Spin with no detergent at all.
