Two machines can look identical on the laundry-room floor and take completely different parts. Maytag builds several versions of the same cabinet inside one model year, and the wiring diagram, the control board and the service bulletins are all filed against the model number rather than the shape of the lid. The serial number then narrows the machine down to a production run.
Where the Plate Usually Sits
Maytag has moved the plate between product families and model years, so treat this as a list of first places to look rather than a guarantee:
- Top-load washers: under the lid on the rim of the tub opening, or low on the back of the cabinet.
- Front-load washers and dryers: inside the door opening, on the frame the door closes against.
- Dryers with a top-mounted control panel: sometimes inside the door, sometimes behind the lint filter housing.
- Refrigerators: on a side wall inside the fresh-food compartment, often near the top, occasionally behind a crisper.
- Dishwashers: on the edge of the inner door or the tub rim, visible only with the door open.
- Ranges and wall ovens: on the oven frame with the door open, or on the frame behind the storage drawer.
- Over-the-range microwaves: inside the opening along the cavity frame, or underneath beside the grease filter housing.
Why a Decoded Date Is Only an Estimate
Serial formats have changed across the decades, and the letter-and-digit patterns that hint at a build date are not consistent across every product family. Online decoders return a confident year for anything you type into them, and that confidence is not the same thing as accuracy. If the age of the machine matters for a repair decision, the useful evidence is paperwork: the publication date printed on the owner's manual, and the model number written on a purchase invoice or a registration email.
Photograph It Rather Than Copying It
On a small silver sticker, 0 and O, 1 and I, 5 and S all look the same, and one wrong character sends the wrong part to your door. Take a single sharp photo of the whole plate, including the electrical ratings printed around the numbers, and attach it when you book a visit. If the sticker has rubbed away, the retailer's invoice normally carries the model number word for word.
