Frost Building Up in a Maytag Refrigerator or Freezer

Some frost is normal, and some is the first visible sign of a defrost fault. Where the ice forms tells you which one you are looking at.

A frost-free refrigerator does not avoid making frost. It makes frost constantly on the evaporator coil and melts it away on a schedule. So the question is never whether there is frost, it is where the frost is and whether it clears.

Frost That Is Normal

A light even dusting on the back wall of the freezer, heavier in humid weather or after the door has been open while you loaded shopping. Ice crystals on packets left open. A little frost around the ice maker. All of that comes and goes.

Frost That Is Not

  • A thickening slab on the rear interior wall that returns within days of being cleared.
  • Ice building around the fan opening, often with a buzzing or ticking noise as the fan blade catches it.
  • Frost inside the fresh-food compartment, on shelves or the rear wall, which usually means humid air is getting in.
  • A freezer that keeps food frozen while the fresh-food side warms up, which often follows a blocked evaporator.

What an Owner Can Do

Check the door seals along their whole length. Close the door on a sheet of paper and pull: it should drag. Do that at several points, especially at the corners. Clean the gaskets with warm soapy water, because sticky residue stops them sealing. Make sure nothing inside is holding a door ajar, and confirm the ice maker arm and dispenser flap are seating properly.

Manual defrosting, by emptying the appliance and leaving the doors open with towels down for several hours, will clear the ice. What it will not do is fix the reason it formed. If frost rebuilds quickly afterwards, the cause is usually a defrost heater, a defrost thermostat or sensor, or the control that runs the cycle.

Where to Stop

Never chip ice off with a knife or a screwdriver. The evaporator tubing sits directly behind that ice, and puncturing it turns a modest repair into a sealed-system job. Never point a heat gun at the interior either. Defrost components sit behind panels with live wiring, so once you have ruled out seals and airflow, book a Maytag refrigerator repair and mention how fast the ice returns after a manual defrost.
