What Door Alarm Light Means
The Door Ajar alarm sounds when a refrigerator door or the freezer drawer has been left open for two to five minutes depending on the model, with cooling switched on. Maytag states that the alarm repeats every two minutes and that closing all the doors turns it off and resets it. There is also a mute option for when you are cleaning inside with the door held open.
Common Causes of Door Alarm Light
- Door or freezer drawer genuinely left open
- An item inside blocking the door from closing
- Door gasket torn, flattened or dirty
- Refrigerator not level, so doors do not self-close
- Door switch failing and reporting a closed door as open
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Close every door and drawer firmly and the alarm stops. If it sounds when everything looks shut, check what is actually holding a door off its seal: a tall bottle in a door bin catching a shelf, a drawer not pushed fully home, or a package wedged at the back of the freezer drawer are the everyday causes. Then look at the gasket itself - if it is torn, flattened or sticky with spills, clean it with warm soapy water and check it seals along its whole length. A door that swings back open on its own suggests the refrigerator is not sitting level.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- None - closing doors and cleaning a gasket is ordinary use.
