Self-clean runs the cavity far hotter than any cooking cycle, which is why the door locks before it starts and stays locked while the oven cools. Owners generally meet this the first time they use the feature, and assume something has broken.
Give It the Cooling Time
The latch releases when the internal temperature drops below a safe threshold, not when the timer ends. That can take anywhere from thirty minutes to a couple of hours depending on the model and the kitchen. Leave the oven alone during that time, keep the door shut, and do not switch the breaker off, because some controls need power to drive the latch motor when the moment comes.
If It Is Cold and Still Locked
- Check the display. A lock icon, a countdown or a fault code changes the answer, so note exactly what is shown.
- Make sure a control lock or child lock was not enabled separately, which is a different lock from the self-clean one.
- Try one full power cycle: switch the breaker off for a minute, then on. Some controls re-check the latch position on power-up and release it.
- Look for debris. A large piece of burnt residue at the front edge can foul the latch path.
What Not to Do
Do not force the door or lever it with a tool. The latch is a small motorised mechanism, and forcing it turns a modest repair into a replacement of the whole assembly, sometimes with a bent door and damaged hinges alongside. Do not run self-clean again in the hope of resetting it either.
Why Self-Clean Sometimes Causes Other Faults
The heat that burns residue away is also hard on components. Latch motors, temperature sensors, door switches and control boards occasionally fail during or shortly after a self-clean. If your oven came out of the cycle with no heat, a locked door and a code on the display, that sequence is a known pattern rather than a coincidence. Many owners find that wiping the cavity with a damp cloth while it is still slightly warm, plus an occasional gentle manual clean, avoids the need for the cycle altogether.
If the oven is cold, the power cycle changed nothing and the door is still locked, book a Maytag oven repair rather than forcing it, and quote whatever the display is showing.
