What F5E2 Means
F5E2 means the lock was commanded to engage but never confirmed that it did. Maytag lists the everyday causes first: the door not completely closed, or an item sticking out past the opening. On top-load models it is described as an obstruction in the lid lock area.

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the door, reduce the load if it is packed tight, and make sure nothing is poking out beyond the opening - clothes need room to tumble freely, and a sleeve across the seal is enough to stop the latch. Clean the lock recess and the striker with a damp cloth to clear detergent build-up. Close the door firmly and restart. If it still will not lock, unplug for five minutes and try once more; a lock that clicks but never confirms, or does nothing, is a replacement part.
