What F21 Means

F21 is the older front-load drain code. Maytag documents it as a drain problem and asks two questions directly: is the drain hose kinked, and is the drain hose clogged. The machine has water it cannot get rid of in the time allowed.

Common Causes of F21

  • Drain hose kinked or crushed
  • Drain pump filter blocked with lint and debris
  • Standpipe or household drain partly blocked
  • Drain pump worn or failing

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch the washer off at the wall before working on the drain, since the pump can restart when power returns. Straighten the drain hose and check it is not crushed behind the machine or pushed too deep into the standpipe. Then open the access panel at the lower front, put a shallow tray and towels underneath, and clean the drain pump filter - on a machine of this age it is usually full of lint, hair and the occasional coin. Refit the cap firmly, restore power and run a Drain and Spin.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The pump can energise when power is restored, so the machine must be unplugged before the filter is opened.
  • A drum holding water will empty through the filter opening, so have a tray and towels ready.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Every few months on a busy household machine, and any time a drain code appears.

That points at the pump or the hose run beyond the filter, which is a service job.
