What LOC, L or Padlock Icon Means
LOC, a letter L, or a padlock icon means the Control Lock feature is enabled. Maytag documents it for both countertop and over-the-range models, and the unlock method depends on the model: pressing and holding Cancel for three seconds, or pressing and holding Start for five seconds.
Common Causes of LOC, L or Padlock Icon

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Hold the Cancel key for three seconds and watch the display. If nothing happens, try holding Start for five seconds instead, since Maytag lists both depending on model. Hold the key steadily rather than tapping it - a brief press will not release the lock, which is the point of the feature. A microwave that appears completely dead but shows a padlock is locked, not broken, and this is worth checking before anyone books a repair.
