What Lock on the Cooktop Means
On an electric range, the Control Lock prevents unintended use of the surface cooking areas. Maytag describes two behaviours: if Control Lock is activated while power to the cooktop is off, the cooktop is locked out entirely and no surface area can be turned on from the touch controls; if it is activated while power is on, all keypads are locked except Power and Off.
Common Causes of Lock on the Cooktop
- Control Lock switched on deliberately
- Lock engaged accidentally while cleaning the surface
- Cooktop locked out while powered down
- Unlock key not held long enough
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Touch and hold the LOCK key to unlock, holding it steadily for a few seconds rather than tapping. A cooktop that was locked out while powered down will not respond to any cooking key at all until it is unlocked, which is what makes it look like a dead cooktop. This is the first thing worth checking on surface controls that appear completely unresponsive while the oven side works normally.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- None - this is a control feature. Clean the glass only when cool.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
