Most Maytag refrigerators make cold in one place and distribute it to the rest of the cabinet. That single design decision explains the complaint we hear most: a freezer working perfectly above a fresh-food section that has drifted up into the fifties. When only one compartment is warm, the sealed system is usually still running and something is interrupting delivery.
Food Comes First
Stand a thermometer in a glass of water on a middle shelf, leave it several hours, then read it. The FDA target for the fresh-food compartment is 40°F or below. Perishable items such as milk, meat, soft cheese, cut fruit and leftovers that have sat above 40°F for more than two hours should be discarded rather than judged by look or smell. Move anything you want to keep into a cooler with ice before you start investigating.
Checks You Can Safely Make
- Settings and modes: confirm the fresh-food setpoint has not been nudged, and check the manual for a showroom or demo mode that lights the display without cooling.
- Vents: a cereal box or a tall bottle parked against the vent feeding the fresh-food side starves it. Keep a few inches clear around every vent.
- Doors: a drawer off its runner can hold a door a fraction open all day. Look along each gasket for gaps and check nothing fouls the door as it closes.
- Condenser coils: unplug the refrigerator, vacuum the coils behind the lower grille or at the back as your manual describes, then plug it back in.
- Frost pattern in the freezer: light even frost is normal. A thick slab of ice in one area is worth reporting.
What It Usually Turns Out to Be
When the easy items check out, the common findings are an evaporator fan that has stalled, frost blocking the evaporator because a defrost component failed, or a damper that no longer opens to pass cold air forward. Each means removing interior panels and working around live wiring, so it belongs with a technician. Damage caused during an attempted repair can also put warranty coverage at risk if the work is not carried out by an authorized technician, so check your warranty terms before opening anything.
