A refrigerator water filter is one of the few genuinely owner-serviceable parts on the appliance. The change itself takes a minute. The problems come from what happens either side of it.
Getting the Right Cartridge
Filters are not universal, even within one brand. The cartridge is matched to the housing, and a part that looks close will either refuse to seat or seat badly and leak. Take the part number from the old cartridge, or from the filter section of the owner's manual, and match it exactly. Keep the packaging until the new one has run for a day without dripping.
Doing the Change
- Have a towel and a shallow container ready. A small amount of water always escapes.
- Follow the direction of rotation marked on the housing. Some designs turn a quarter turn, others push in and release.
- Seat the new cartridge firmly until it stops. A cartridge that is nearly home is the usual cause of a puddle a day later.
- Flush several litres through the dispenser, into a jug, until the water runs clear and stops spitting. Air in the line causes the sputtering, and the first water often carries harmless carbon fines.
- Discard the first batch of ice made afterwards, for the same reason.
- Reset the filter indicator as the manual describes, usually by holding a button for a few seconds.
If Water Flow Is Poor Afterwards
Slow flow after a change usually means either air still in the line, a cartridge not fully seated, or a filter that is not the correct part. Reseat it first and flush again. If flow is still weak, check the supply valve behind or under the appliance is fully open, and look for a kinked supply line where the refrigerator was pushed back.
When flow stays poor with a correct, properly seated filter, the fault is usually further upstream: the inlet valve, the line to the dispenser, or a frozen section of tubing. Book a Maytag refrigerator repair and say whether ice production dropped at the same time, because that points at where in the water path the restriction sits.
