A Maytag washer that finishes its cycle with water still standing in the tub has told you something useful: the machine got as far as trying to drain. In most cases the pump is running and the water has nowhere to go. The blockage is normally somewhere an owner can inspect, as long as the machine is isolated first.
Before You Touch Anything
Unplug the washer at the wall, or switch off its breaker if the plug is behind the machine and out of reach. Then close both water taps behind it. Only after the power and the water are off should you start moving the machine or opening panels. Put old towels and a shallow tray down before anything else, because a tub of standing water goes somewhere the moment a hose comes loose.
Checks You Can Make Yourself
- The drain hose: look for a kink behind the machine, and check the hose has not been pushed so far down the standpipe that it siphons or blocks.
- The standpipe or sink trap: if a nearby sink also drains slowly, the restriction is in the house plumbing rather than the washer.
- The drain pump filter, on models that have one: front-load machines usually have an access door at the bottom of the front panel. Your manual will show whether yours does and how to drain it into a tray first.
- Load size and detergent: a dose meant for a standard machine produces a foam blanket in a high-efficiency drum, and foam can stall drainage. If the tub is full of suds, that is a lead worth mentioning.
What a Technician Usually Finds
Once the reachable items are clear, the common findings are a coin, a hairpin or a sock jammed in the pump impeller, a split or collapsed drain hose inside the cabinet, a failed pump motor, or a control problem that never sends the pump its signal. Those repairs mean opening the cabinet with the machine tipped or pulled out, working close to mains wiring and a tub of water, so they belong with a technician. Damage caused during an attempted repair can also put warranty coverage at risk if the work is not carried out by an authorized technician, so read your warranty terms first.
