What F2 E1 Means
F2 E1 is the odd one out in the F2 family and one of the most genuinely useful codes Maytag publishes. Rather than naming a component, it asks whether the grates are installed correctly, and explains how to check: when the range is cool, rock each grate corner to corner and side to side, and if it wobbles it may be installed backwards. Switching the grates round and cycling power to the range is the published remedy.
Common Causes of F2 E1
- Grates fitted backwards after cleaning
- Grates swapped between positions they do not fit
- Grate feet worn or a foot missing
- Cooktop surface not level
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wait until the range is completely cool, then test each grate exactly as described - rock it corner to corner and side to side on the cooktop. A grate that wobbles is very likely on backwards, and continuous cast iron grates in particular are easy to fit the wrong way round after cleaning. Swap or rotate them until each sits flat and stable, then cut power to the range for a minute and restore it. If the code persists with properly seated grates, book a diagnosis.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Let the cavity cool completely before reaching inside; a recently used oven stays hot for a long time.
- Cast iron grates are heavy and retain heat for a long time after cooking.
