What Indicator Flashing on a Range Cooktop Means

On the smoothtop cooktop of an electric range, a flashing indicator means one or more keys are permanently pressed. Maytag asks you to make sure the cooktop controls are OFF and to remove any object left on the control area or wipe away debris on the panel surface.

Common Causes of Indicator Flashing on a Range Cooktop

  • Object resting on the control area
  • Dried spill or grease film on the panel
  • Steam from a pan condensing on the controls
  • Touch control failing

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Clear the control area completely, then wipe the panel with a cloth wrung out in soapy water and dry it - a dried boil-over across the touch area holds a key exactly as a finger does. Make sure all controls are off before you start, so nothing switches on under the cloth. Let the glass cool first. If the indicator still flashes on a clean cold panel, the touch control needs testing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Clean only on a cool cooktop, and never spray cleaner directly at the panel.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
