What E23 Means
Maytag is specific with E23: the oven did not reach preheat temperature within thirty minutes. It names the heater, the appliance control board, or the associated wiring. The oven is trying to heat and failing to get there, rather than refusing to start.
Common Causes of E23
- Heating element failed or partly open
- Relay on the control board not holding
- Vents blocked, so heat is being lost
- Wiring to the heater damaged
- Supply voltage low
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch the microwave off at its circuit breaker for one minute, restore power, and then run a short heating test with a cup of water to verify operation, which is the check Maytag asks for. Check that nothing is blocking the vents around the unit, since an oven fighting poor airflow struggles to reach temperature. Then test the microwave function separately with a cup of water. Do not simply run longer preheats in the hope it gets there - a heater that cannot reach temperature in thirty minutes has a real fault, and running it repeatedly puts sustained load on the heating circuit.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A microwave oven holds a high voltage capacitor that can retain a dangerous charge long after the appliance is unplugged, so the cabinet is never opened at home under any circumstances.
- An over-the-range unit is also mounted above a cooking surface at head height and is heavy enough to need two people and a support to remove safely.
