What LdL or dLO Means

Maytag uses LdL on some top-load displays and dLO on others for the same fault: the lid lock was told to engage and the control never got confirmation that it did. Because the basket cannot spin safely with an unlocked lid, the cycle stops here. Maytag lists two ordinary causes before any electrical one - something in the load holding the lid up, and detergent build-up around the lock mechanism.

Common Causes of LdL or dLO

  • Laundry or a stray item sitting under the lid edge
  • Detergent or softener build-up around the lock striker
  • Lid lock assembly worn or failed
  • Wiring to the lid lock damaged
  • Control board not reading the lock signal

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Open the lid and look along the rim where the lock engages. Push any laundry down and away from the opening, and check for a sock or a strap sitting directly under the lid edge. Then wipe the lock striker and the recess it drops into with a damp cloth: dried detergent and fabric softener build up there and stop the latch travelling far enough. Close the lid firmly and restart. If it still will not lock, unplug the washer for five minutes to reset the control and try once more. A lid lock that clicks but never reports locked, or does nothing at all, is a replacement part rather than an adjustment.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • The lid lock is what stops the basket spinning with the lid open, so it should never be defeated or taped down.
  • Reaching into the lock recess with the machine plugged in risks the latch driving onto a finger.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

LdL or dLO FAQ

The washer will fill and agitate on some cycles but it will not spin, so the load comes out soaking wet.

The striker has to drop into a narrow recess. A film of dried detergent is enough to hold it a millimetre short, which the control reads as not locked.
