What LdU or dU Means

LdU, shown as dU on some models, is the opposite of the lock fault: the cycle has finished and the control tried to release the lid, but the lock could not move. Maytag states the usual reason plainly - something is sitting on top of the washer lid and holding it down. The load is finished and safe; it is simply shut in.

Common Causes of LdU or dU

  • A basket, laundry or other weight resting on the lid
  • Lid slightly warped or the hinge binding
  • Lid lock assembly seized
  • Control not sending the release signal

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Take everything off the lid. A laundry basket, a folded pile of towels or a bottle of detergent is enough weight to stop the latch releasing. Press the lid down firmly once and let go, which takes the load off the latch, then wait for the control to retry. If the lid still will not release, unplug the washer for five minutes: on most models the lock opens as the control powers down, and you can lift the lid once it has. If the lid remains locked after a full reset with nothing on top of it, the lock assembly has failed mechanically and needs replacing.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Forcing a locked lid bends the striker and usually turns a simple fault into a broken lid and a broken lock.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

FAQ

LdU or dU FAQ

Yes. The cycle has finished, so there is no water or movement, though a wet load left shut in overnight will start to smell.

On most models it does, because the lock defaults to open with no power. If it does not, the lock itself has failed.
