What F3E2 Means

Maytag names the potential cause of F3E2 as the thermistor or the OWI sensor. The thermistor reads water temperature; the OWI, or optical water indicator, reads how cloudy the wash water is so the machine can decide how long to wash and when to change the water. A fault in either leaves the control without the readings it uses to run the cycle.

Common Causes of F3E2

  • Scale or grease film over the OWI sensor lens
  • Hard water without rinse aid
  • Thermistor failed or out of tolerance
  • OWI sensor failed
  • Wiring to the sensor damaged

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Reset the control by cutting power for thirty seconds - unplug the dishwasher if it is on an outlet, or switch off its breaker if it is hard-wired - then restore power and run a short cycle. Then check the bottom of the tub: the OWI sensor is a small lens in the sump area, and a film of hard-water scale, grease or dissolved food soil across it will make it read wrongly. Running an empty cycle with a dishwasher cleaner, and using rinse aid if your water is hard, addresses the cause most often behind a clouded sensor. If the code persists after cleaning and a reset, the sensor or the thermistor has failed.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Do not scrape the sensor lens; a scratched lens reads no better than a dirty one.
  • Replacing either sensor means removing the lower spray arm and filter assembly and working on mains-connected parts, so it is a service job.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

Optical water indicator. It measures how dirty the wash water is.

In hard water it reduces the film that builds over the sensor, so it helps prevent a repeat.
