Owners often compare a current dishwasher to one from twenty years ago and conclude that drying has got worse. What actually changed is the method. Older machines ran a hot element through a long dry cycle. Efficient machines rely more on the heat stored in the final rinse, on rinse aid sheeting water off surfaces, and in some designs on condensation against a stainless tub. The result is different rather than broken, though genuine faults do exist.
Rinse Aid Is Not Optional Any More
Without it, water clings as droplets that sit and evaporate slowly, leaving both wet dishes and spots. With it, water sheets off and takes the heat with it. Fill the reservoir, check the dosage setting in the manual, and top it up regularly even when using all-in-one tablets, because the rinse-aid component in those is modest.
Plastics and Loading
- Plastic holds almost no heat, so it dries worst of all. Expect to towel plastic containers dry, and put them on the top rack.
- Angle bowls, mugs and glasses so water runs off rather than pooling in the base.
- Avoid nesting items and overlapping plates, which trap water and block airflow.
- Crack the door open at the end of the cycle and let steam escape for ten minutes before unloading. It makes a bigger difference than any setting.
- Unload the bottom rack first, so water sitting in upturned cups above does not tip onto dry plates below.
Settings and Real Faults
Check whether an extra dry, heated dry or sanitise option exists and is selected, since eco cycles trade drying performance for energy. Also confirm the incoming water is genuinely hot, because a cool final rinse leaves nothing to dry with.
Worth a call: dishes that come out cold as well as wet, standing water in the tub at the same time, or a machine that used to dry properly and stopped abruptly. Those point at the heating element, a thermostat, a vent flap or the control. Book a Maytag dishwasher repair and mention whether the dishes are hot when the door opens.
