What C81, C82 or C83 on a Range Means
On the cooktop of an electric range, Maytag publishes C81, C82 and C83 as the surface cooking area having overheated with the automatic shutoff activated. The instruction is to turn the oven off if it is operating, wait five minutes for the area to cool, then turn the cooktop back on.
Common Causes of C81, C82 or C83 on a Range
- Pan boiled dry or left empty on a hot element
- Long operation at a high setting
- Pan much smaller than the cooking area
- Heat from the oven below adding to the cooktop temperature
- Ventilation restricted around the range
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Turn everything off, including the oven if it is running, and wait the five minutes Maytag specifies. Then look at what caused the overheat: a pan boiled dry, a pan much smaller than the element, or a very long session at a high setting. On a range the oven below contributes heat as well, which is why the published instruction mentions turning it off. Do not cool the glass with water.
