What AF or F4E3 or Check Vent Means
Maytag documents AF, the Check Vent indicator and F4E3 as the same condition: restricted airflow. Its own wording names the causes - the lint screen or vent is clogged, or the vent is crushed, kinked or has too many turns. The dryer keeps running with this code present and lets you clear it from the display, but it should not be ignored, because a blocked dryer vent is a recognised fire risk as well as the reason clothes take two cycles to dry.
Common Causes of AF or F4E3 or Check Vent
- Lint screen clogged, or filmed over by fabric softener
- Vent hose crushed behind the dryer
- Lint built up in the wall duct
- Outside vent flap blocked or stuck shut
- Vent run too long or with too many bends
- Airflow sensor or thermistor misreading
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the drum cool, then unplug the dryer or switch off its breaker before working at the back. Pull the lint screen out and clean it every load; if water runs off it rather than through it, wash the mesh with warm soapy water to strip the film that fabric softener leaves. Next, pull the dryer forward and disconnect the vent hose at the back - clear the lint out of the hose, the wall duct and the outlet flap outside, which is often where a nest of lint or an actual bird nest sits. Refit with the hose as short and straight as it will go, with no crushed section behind the machine. If the code returns with a genuinely clear vent, the thermistor or the airflow sensing side needs testing.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A gas dryer moved for vent access has a flexible gas line behind it; a line that is strained or kinked is a leak risk, so a gas machine is better pulled out by someone who can check the connection afterwards.
- The drum and exhaust stay hot for some time after a cycle, so let it cool before reaching into the duct.
