What ERR Means
Maytag explains ERR plainly: it appears when the door has not been completely closed and latched. The dryer will not run unless the door is shut, so this is the machine telling you why it did not start rather than reporting a fault.
Common Causes of ERR
- Door not pushed fully shut
- Laundry caught over the door edge
- Lint in the latch or strike plate
- Door switch worn out or failed
- Door hinge sagging so the catch misses
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the door fully and close it again with a firm push until it latches. Check the strike and the catch for lint build-up, and look for a towel corner or a sleeve hanging over the door edge and holding it a few millimetres open. If the door is clearly shut and ERR remains, the door switch is not making contact - a switch that no longer clicks when the door closes is a replacement part, and it is one of the cheaper repairs on a dryer.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The door switch stops the drum turning with the door open, so it must not be bypassed or taped.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
