What Cooling Off Means
COOLING OFF on the display means exactly that: Maytag states the refrigerator and freezer will not cool while cooling is turned off. It is a deliberate mode, used for cleaning or for storage, and it is not a fault. Check the manual for your model number and use the combination it gives to turn cooling back on. Once cooling resumes, allow several hours before judging the temperature, and check the food with a thermometer if the mode has been on for any length of time: above 40F for more than two hours in the fresh food compartment means discarding rather than tasting.
