There is water sitting in the bottom. What should I do first?

Switch the dishwasher off at the breaker, then lift out and rinse the filter assembly under the tap - on the current designs it twists out by hand and blocked filters cause more standing water than any failed part. If water still sits there afterwards, the drain pump, the drain hose or the sink connection needs a proper diagnosis. Do not reach into the sump area while the machine has power.

A little water always stays in the sump. Is that a fault?

No. A small amount of water in the sump area is by design on most models - it keeps seals from drying out between cycles. What is not normal is standing water above the base of the tub, or water that has clearly not moved since the last cycle.

Why are the dishes still wet at the end?

Condensation drying, which most current models use, relies on a genuinely hot final rinse and on plastics that do not hold water in their rims. Check that rinse aid is topped up, that the hot tap runs hot at the sink before you start, and that items are not nested. If the final rinse is not reaching temperature, the heating circuit or its sensor needs testing.

It smells even after running. Why?

Almost always residue: the filter, the spray arm holes, the door edge and the gasket fold all collect food debris that no cycle reaches. Clean those by hand, then run a hot cycle empty. A smell that survives that, or comes with slow draining, points at the drain hose or the sink connection instead.
